Cannabis and the Immune System

Presented by Dr Philip Blair, MD

About this module:

In this learning module, leading cannabis clinician and expert, Dr Philip Blair MD explores how key phytocannabinoids can modulate the various aspects of our immune system. Beginning with a brief overview of the expanded endocannabinoid system, we learn about various stresses on the ECS such as oxidative stress, and the various ways in which we naturally modulate our immune system, before turning to those modulators of the ECS- phytocannabinoids, N-acyl ethanolamines and other components of cannabis. We also learn about how phytocannabinoids, in particular CBD modulate inflammation, immune cells, oxidative stress and the neuro-immune axis as well as affecting zinc. Dr Blair also discusses evidence for the immune suppression versus immune enhancing effects of CBD.

This presentation is suitable for healthcare practitioners and those with a background in biomedical sciences. It assumes a knowledge of the endocannabinoid system and a basic understanding of medicinal cannabis pharmacodynamics.
Learning Outcomes

At the end of this module, learners will be able to:

  • Explain how various lifestyle factors and common pharmaceuticals impact on modulation of our immune system.
  • Explain the importance of omega-3 fatty acids to the endocannabinoidome.
  • Describe mechanisms of action of CBD and THC in addressing inflammation and regulating immune cell function.
  • Explain how CBD can reduce inflammation through regulating the neuro-immune axis as well as through regulating zinc.
  • Debate whether CBD’s action are immune enhancing or immune suppressing and the relevance of the scientific findings.
MEET THE INSTRUCTOR

Dr Philip Blair, MD

Dr. Philip Blair, MD, (Colonel, US Army, retired) is a Family Physician and consultant in disease management in the Northwest USA. He graduated from West Point in 1972, attended the University of Miami School of Medicine, training as an Army Family Physician and serving as a combat physician in the first Gulf War. After medical assignments in three continents and 29 years in uniform, he retired from the Army and has been consulting on complex disease management since 2000.

Dr. Blair has been studying, treating, and lecturing about the human body’s natural endocannabinoid system (ECS) since 2014. His goal is to restore health and performance by enhancing the ECS using diet, exercise, appropriate medications and non-psychoactive therapies.
