Foundation Case Study: Module 1 (Insomnia & Anxiety)

About this module:

In this module, Dr Olga De Sanctis (Canada) and Dr Carolyn Bosak (Australia), general practitioners and medicinal cannabis experts, present case studies focused on common conditions seen in clinic: insomnia and  anxiety. This is an active learning exercise in which you, as the learner, will start to learn about the diversity of medicinal cannabis products available for prescribing. Whilst it is not usual practice in medical education to mention product names, this active learning activity uses real de-identified case studies and real medicinal cannabis product information for the purposes of educating healthcare practitioners about the different types of medicinal cannabis products including their features and differences. It is therefore necessary to provide examples of actual medicinal cannabis products in this active learning activity.

Your task will be to watch the first part of the video, the presenting case information, then using the product brochure supplied with each case study, answer six questions posed. Then you will come back to the video and learn what the doctor actually prescribed for this patient and why.
Learning Outcomes

At the end of this module, learners will be able to:

  • Provide a rationale for the treatment of insomnia with medicinal cannabis.
  • Provide a rationale for the treatment of anxiety with medicinal cannabis.
  • Begin to formulate a treatment strategy that includes medicinal cannabis for a patient suffering with insomnia.
  • Begin to formulate a treatment strategy that includes medicinal cannabis for a patient suffering with anxiety.
  • Differentiate between various medicinal cannabis products available, with respect to the form of the product, routes of delivery, cannabinoid and terpene profiles and other features
MEET THE INSTRUCTOR

Professor Kylie O'Brien, PhD

Professor Kylie O’Brien PhD is an Adjunct Professor at Torrens University. She has a strong academic career in the fields of Chinese medicine, integrative medicine and, after a career change in 2000; medicinal cannabis. She has worked for the Victorian Department of Human Services, and held senior leadership roles in the university and private education sector. An internationally recognised expert in Chinese medicine and integrative medicine, she has published extensively, including a book on integrative oncology (US: Springer, 2017). Kylie’s second book – on mental health and medicinal cannabis – is due for publication in 2020. She is a member of the TGA Advisory Committee for Complementary Medicines and a TEQSA Expert Panel.

Kylie has been leading doctor education on medicinal cannabis in Australia since 2018. Her courses were the first to receive RACGP Category 1 CPD accreditation. She also set up the pathway via the National Institute of Integrative Medicine Ethics Committee for doctors to apply to become authorised prescribers of medicinal cannabis under the TGA’s Authorised Prescriber Scheme.
