Medical Cannabis Epilepsy & Cannabinoids

About this module:

Epilepsy is a neurological condition that can cause devastating effects on children and adults and their families. There are several aetiological factors, and western pharmaceuticals are not always effective in treating it. In this presentation, nurse practitioner and cannabis prescriber Elisabeth Mack explores how medicinal cannabis may be able to assist in its treatment including some of the human studies of efficacy. Elisabeth presents treatment strategies and illustrates her experience in treating this condition with medicinal cannabis. 
This presentation is suitable for healthcare practitioners and those with a background in biomedical sciences. It assumes a knowledge of the endocannabinoid system and medicinal cannabis pharmacodynamics.

  • Explain some of the potential benefits of medicinal cannabis as a therapeutic option for epilepsy.
  • Discuss some of the scientific studies that indicate medicinal cannabis may be efficacious in the treatment of epilepsy.
  • Apply a prescribing strategy for the treatment of epilepsy using cannabis oils/ tinctures.
  • Apply a dosing strategy for the treatment of epilepsy using edibles and topical use routes of delivery.
  • Compare and contrast dosing strategies for children compared with adults. 
MEET THE PRESENTER

Elisabeth Mack

Elisabeth Mack, RN, BSN, MBA founded Holistic Caring in 2016 to bridge the gap between traditional and cannabis medicine through education, guidance, and supportive care for patients with product choices, dosages, interactions and timing. 

Elisabeth is a provider for the California Board of Registered Nursing and authored a curriculum to train healthcare providers to have these conversations with patients, approaching cannabis by emphasizing holistic and functional medicine. 

Elisabeth’s background includes a decade in hospitals where she specialized in psychiatry and medicine. Elisabeth spent the 20 years prior to Holistic Caring in operations and sales management of several health insurance carriers and believes cannabinoid medicines offer health and wholeness through patient empowerment.  

Elisabeth earned an MBA in Healthcare Administration, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and a Bachelor of Arts in psychology. She is a member of the Society of Cannabis Clinicians and serves on the Boards of the American Cannabis Nurses Association & Los Angeles NORML.
